We meet Charlie Sinclair, a blue-collar factory worker in Boston ( they used to have factories there, believe it to be true or not ) who plays the guitar in a heavy rock and roll band called Pistonhead. A pal who is also in the music business recommended ‘Pistonhead’ to me which was a revelation! I spent a number of years in the ditchs of rock’n'roll and this book hits a bulls-eye. The band isn’t quite successful–the book opens on a Thursday night at the Massive Ditch Club, where the band has drawn an audience of five hundred folks ( heavy drinkers, and a violent bunch ).

The audiences, the flaky boss who makes a fortune from a dead customer, the smarmy concert promoter, the wacky road crew, the sleazy squeezes, the violence and shagging and sniffing, the Dust Twins ( I knew those fellows ), the stuff that goes thru Charlie’s mind while he’s performing on stage–it’s all here. What makes Pistonhead different is that it gives you the entire picture and devotes attention to the ‘real world’ of Charlie’s mind-numbing real job on the production line with the Mass Rehabilitation clients. I will now basically judge how he’s feeling by what he’s playing! I’m eventually learning the piano at the age of 40 thanks to the unending support of my beautiful eight years old! His patience as he teaches me over a week what he simply picks up in a day or two is glorious to see in somebody so young. The time we spend together every day pumping out tunes ( as he calls it, ‘Hey pop, wanna pump out some tunes!’ ) is a particularly special part of my day and is a bond between me and my boy that I’m expecting to last a life-time.
